Presidential Recognition Awarded to Stanbridge College Community Service Efforts for Fifth Consecutive Year

Stanbridge College is named to the 2014 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the fifth consecutive year.

Irvine, California – Stanbridge College has been named to the 2014 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service for the fifth consecutive year. The award is the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement. The recognition honors the college for its positive impact on local and global communities including:

  • Co-founding the Free Pantry Organization, a non-profit organization that provides a free source of nutritious food to low-income families and the homeless
  • Donating over 275,000 lbs. of fresh produce to Orange County residents in need
  • Serving over 6,695 meals to the homeless
  • Providing 1,029 low-income families and the homeless with free medical and dental health access
  • Administering over 1,070 flu shots for the County of Orange
  • Raising $10,000 to provide Lestonnac Free Clinic with a new portable dental x-ray machine allowing the clinic to expand their dental services for the uninsured

“Service and higher education go hand in hand,” said Ms. Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. “These schools are inspiring young leaders to roll up their sleeves and work alongside community members to solve problems. By recognizing the institutions who are leading the way to achieve meaningful, measurable results for the communities they serve, we also highlight the vital role all colleges and universities play in addressing community challenges and placing more students on a lifelong path of civic engagement.

President of Stanbridge College, Mr. Yasith Weerasuriya stated, “We are very humbled and pleased to be recognized by the Corporation for National and Community Service for our service efforts. Each year we strive to give more to those in need in our community. Our goal is to continue to serve the underprivileged population in Orange County with the basic necessities of life and expand our efforts locally and globally for the betterment of humanity.”

The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll recognizes higher education institutions that reflect the values of exemplary community service and achieve meaningful outcomes in their communities.

Throughout the year, Stanbridge College developed and maintained its long-term community partnerships with non-profits including the Autism Speaks Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Association, Southern California Special Olympics, Hoag Blood Donor Services, the Free Pantry Organization, Orange County Medical Reserve Corps, OC Parks, Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, the Illumination Foundation, and Irvine Animal Care Center.
